Endodontic Surgery

Endodontic Surgery (Apicoectomy)

Endodontic surgery, also known as an apicoectomy, is a specialized procedure used when a root canal or retreatment is not enough to eliminate infection. During this treatment, the tip of the tooth’s root is removed along with the surrounding infected tissue, helping preserve the natural tooth and prevent extraction. It is a safe and effective solution for treating persistent infections deep within the bone.
When is an apicoectomy needed?

Infection persists after root canal or retreatment

Inflammation or lesions near the root tip

Complex root anatomy that cannot be treated internally

Blocked or inaccessible canals

What Is an Apicoectomy?

An apicoectomy is a minor endodontic surgical procedure performed when infection persists after a root canal or retreatment. It involves removing the infected tissue and the tip of the tooth’s root, then sealing the root end to prevent further infection. This treatment helps preserve the natural tooth and supports proper healing of the surrounding bone.

What Is an Apicoectomy?

An apicoectomy is a minor surgical procedure recommended when infection persists after root canal treatment or retreatment. The procedure removes infection located at the tip of the root.

How the Procedure Is Performed

Local anesthesia is administered to ensure comfort. The endodontist makes a small incision in the gum to access the infected tissue and bone surrounding the root.

The tip of the root is removed and a small filling is placed at the end of the root canal to seal it. The gum tissue is then closed with small stitches to allow proper healing.

Healing and Follow-Up Care

A follow-up appointment is usually scheduled after a few months to evaluate healing with an X-ray and confirm that new bone is forming around the root.
